There are several methods for determining the pitch of a roof, and all you need is a calculator, a spirit level, and a tape measure. With these tools in hand, all you need is access to your attic and a little math skill to calculate roof heights. 

Step 1: Measure the length of the roof 

You'll need to start by measuring the run of the roof - this is the horizontal distance from the top of the roof to the wall. You can use a tape measure or a ruler for precise measurements.

What Is the Roof Pitch?

The slope of the roof is simply the slope created by the rafter. It can be assessed in two ways - either by the angle the rafter makes with the horizontal or by the ratio between the lift and the run of the roof. Roof pitch is usually expressed as an increase to run in the form of x:12. For example, step 1:12 means that for every twelve meters of the length of the building, the height will be one meter. 

We can classify roofs into the following categories: 

  1. Flat roofs are not really completely flat - they need a slight slope for water to flow. Generally, these roofs have a slope of 1/2:12 to 2:12 (from 4.2% to 16.7%). 
  2. Low roofs have a slope less than 4:12 (33.3%). These are often difficult to maintain as they require special materials to prevent leaks. Typical roof slopes range from 4:12 to 9:12 (33.3% to 75%). They are the easiest to build and safe to walk on.

It is also an important factor in cold climates for calculating snow loads. Roof slope, or slope, is a measurement of vertical elevation above a running track expressed in inches per foot, known as elevation above the run. 

This means that the roof is measured 12 inches from the edge on a horizontal line and then measured from that point to where the roof intersects. A roof that rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches horizontally has 6 inches per foot, or 6 x 12 pitch. 

How to Calculate Roof Pitch as a Ratio? 

  • The usual way to measure the slope of a roof is to display it in an X:12 ratio. This is done by counting the number of inches that the roof rises vertically for each 12-inch horizontal extension. You will need tools and roof space to do this simple calculation. 
  • To start, set your sanity against the floor of your roof and use it to find and mark a point 12 inches from the track. 
  • Now determine the distance between the top of your spirit level and the roof floor. To do this, place your tape measure against the vertical track. That will be the climb. 
  • You will get an X:12 ratio, which is the climb:cruise ratio. 
  • You can change this to an angle if you want. 

What Is the Standard Roof Pitch?

There is no universal standard roof pitch. It may vary depending on climate, culture, material availability and style. For example, in the UK, the standard range of roof slopes can be between 40° and 50°, although 45° should be avoided. In the United States, the standard roof slope ranges from 4/12 to 9/12. In more temperate climates, such as Italy, standard roof angles vary between 16 and 25. Modern homes often have "flat roofs," which are not completely flat but have a degree of elevation. as high as 1:40.
